Home > The Chef > Do you have what it takes to be a champion in baking & pastry?

With the announcement that entries are now open for the Richemont Masterbaker Baking & Pastry Championship 2019, the search is on to find the region’s best pastry chef and baker.

Chef Wayne Tapsfield of the Rhodes Group, who served as a judge in last year’s championship, says: “This competition is great for your profile and it’s great for the industry. Personally, I think it helps younger chefs in particular to gain a sense of achievement, it helps their confidence and their self-esteem. The competition really motivates the people who enter to feel like the true professionals they are.”

But what does it take to win?

FIRST, YOU HAVE TO ENTER

To enter the Richemont Masterbaker Baking & Pastry Championship 2019, you need to go to: championship-richemont-masterbaker.com  and register. You’ll be sent an online test to complete by 1st July, which will enable you to prove you know the basics. The 12 bakers and 12 pastry chefs that achieve the highest scores will then go through to the Live Heats in September and battle it out in front of the judges for a place in the Live Finals, the following month.

THE COMPETITION PROCESS

From the four bakers and four pastry chefs who reach the finals, the winners will be announced at the prestigious Pro Chef Middle East Awards in October, in front of an audience of 400 of the region’s most influential chefs and culinary professionals. This could be one of the most important decisions of your career.

THE PRIZES

Each Champion of 2019 will receive:

  • An all-expenses-paid course at Richemont in Lucerne, Switzerland, including travel and accommodation

  • An Advanced Course at Richemont Masterbaker Center for Excellence in Dubai

  • A prestigious custom-made and personalised Chef’s Jacket from the preferred brand of the
    world’s top chefs.

Qualifying competitors that get through to the Live Heats will be awarded a Certificate of participation from the Richemont Masterbaker Center of Excellence in Bakery & Pastry.

GIVING YOURSELF THE EDGE

So how do you give yourself the edge in an important competition like this? The answer is…preparation. You don’t need to be a Head Chef in order to win, you simply need to work on what you do well – and then perfect it through lots of practice beforehand.

To avoid any surprises, you can attend an Open Day prior to the competition, so you can check out the venue that will be staging the Live Heats and Finals. These will be held in the state-of-the-art kitchens of the Richemont Masterbaker Centre of Excellence in Baking & Pastry, in Dubai’s JLT. Be sure to acquaint yourself with the kitchen, the equipment and pay special attention to the ovens.

If you’re well prepared, you’ll bring a genuine confidence to the Live Heats.

IT’S ALL ABOUT SHOWCASING YOURSELF!

It’s not often that pastry chefs and bakers have a platform to show what they can really do and achieve, so a platform like The Richemont Masterbaker Pastry & Baking Championship is a great way to unleash your full skills, talent and creativity. Don’t forget to enjoy the journey because it’s all about showcasing yourself!
